Episiotomy - Definition

A surgical procedure that involves cutting the perineum, the skin between the vagina and the anus, during labor to facilitate delivery.   The goal of this procedure is to enlarge the vaginal opening during delivery, while preventing spontaneous vaginal tears. There has been a shift in practice toward avoiding this procedure if at all possible.
